Ullapool
Ullapool is based on the Northwest Highland
coastline. Established as a fishing port due to the natural protection
offered by the peninsula, the village now serves as a central location for
the highlands. The land and scenery around the Highlands are still rugged
and breathtaking at once and make for a great touring holiday. History is
apparent in the buildings standing still, and the ruins which date back as
far as the Picts, Celts and Vikings who all settled the area. The ferry
from Ullapool pier offers the opportunity to explore Lewis and the
Hebrides, whilst local boats
travel to the Summer Isles beyond Lochbroom.

There is still a major fishing presence in
Ullapool, offering visitors a chance to see an industry threatened in many
parts of Europe and sample some of the best quality seafood in the UK, if
not the world. The village itself offers visitors a chance to appreciate
an environment and pace of life sadly lacking in many places. |
| The roads to Ullapool are good and the village can be
reached either directly from Inverness, via the Western coastline from Skye
and Gairloch, or from the North leading to Cape Wrath and John
O'Groats. For those without transport, there is a regular bus link
twice a day that links the village to Inverness where there are rail, bus
and air links to the rest of the UK. |
